The firm

Who is Rationale Services?

Rationale Services is an accounting and business-services firm working with owner-run companies across the United States. The firm handles bookkeeping, accounting, payroll, taxation, business registration, consultancy, financial services and business support — the whole financial back office, under one engagement, rather than one slice of it. Work is delivered remotely.

The firm's position is narrow on purpose. It is not a tax-season shop, and it is not a software subscription with a support queue attached. It does the continuous work: the books kept current month after month, payroll run every cycle, registrations kept in good standing, and the conversations an owner needs before making a decision that changes the numbers.

What the firm takes on, and how it works

What does Rationale Services take on, and what does it refer out?

Rationale Services takes on the recurring financial operations of a business: transaction recording and reconciliation, the monthly and annual close, financial statements, payroll processing, tax preparation and planning, entity registration and renewals, budgeting and forecasting, and advisory work on specific decisions. It also takes on catch-up work where records have fallen behind.

What it does not take on: audits, reviews, compilations and other attest work; formal business valuations; and representation before tax authorities. Where an engagement runs into work of that kind, the firm identifies it early, refers it to an appropriate provider, and stays in place as the firm that holds your records and supplies what that provider needs.

This is worth knowing before you engage rather than after. An owner who needs audited statements for a lender should hear that in the first conversation, not three months in. The firm's own work frequently sits alongside a referred engagement, and the records being clean is what makes that engagement cheaper.

How does Rationale Services work?

The firm works to a defined process rather than ad hoc. Every engagement runs the same sequence: a discovery conversation, a written scope and fee in an engagement letter, onboarding with the access the work needs, then a fixed monthly rhythm with set deliverables and set checkpoints at quarter and year end.

That structure is what makes the work reliable rather than personality-dependent. The monthly close happens on a schedule, the questions get asked in the same place every month, and the reporting pack contains the same statements each time so you can read it in five minutes instead of relearning it. Changes in scope are handled in writing rather than absorbed quietly.

Principles

What does Rationale Services believe about this work?

Four things, and they shape how every engagement is run.

  • Books that are two months old are history, not management information

A ledger exists so an owner can make a decision on it. The firm closes to a schedule and sends a reporting pack because a number that arrives after the decision has been made has no value.

  • The owner should understand their own numbers, not just receive them

The firm explains what moved and why, in plain words, rather than handing over statements that only another accountant could read. An owner who cannot interrogate their own margin is dependent rather than informed.

  • Scope and fee belong in writing before the work starts

Surprise invoices and silently expanding scope are the two things that destroy these relationships, so both are settled in an engagement letter and any change to them is agreed the same way.

  • Saying what the firm will not do is part of the service

Pretending to cover work that belongs with someone else costs the client more than a referral does, and a firm that names the boundary early is easier to trust inside it.

Coverage

Where does Rationale Services work?

The firm works remotely with businesses across the United States. Remote is the standard arrangement, not a concession: documents, approvals, payroll data and meetings all run through secure digital channels, which means the firm's availability does not depend on your postcode.

Multi-state operations are part of the normal workload. Where a business operates in more than one state, the firm tracks the filing obligations attached to each of those operations and files them on schedule, so the owner is not maintaining a mental list of what is due where.

Software, and the businesses the firm is built for

What software does Rationale Services work in?

The firm works in mainstream accounting and payroll software, and will confirm the specifics in the first conversation.

What kinds of businesses does Rationale Services serve?

Owner-run companies, typically with a handful to a few dozen employees, one entity or several, and an owner still close enough to the money to make the decisions themselves. Industry matters less than structure: what shapes the work is transaction volume, payroll headcount, number of entities and the number of states the business operates in.

The industries we work in sets out the current list, and there are common questions about scope, access and fees answered in one place.

FAQs

Common questions about the firm

Is Rationale Services an accounting firm or a bookkeeping service?

Both, and that is the point. Bookkeeping produces the record; accounting turns it into statements you can read and act on. Rationale Services does the recording and the reporting, plus payroll, tax work and registrations, so the same firm holds the whole chain rather than handing it between providers.

Who will I actually deal with day to day?

You get a consistent point of contact for your engagement, so you are not re-explaining your business to a queue each month. The engagement letter sets out who handles what and where questions go. This site names no individuals by design; introductions happen in the first conversation.

Does Rationale Services only work with businesses, or individuals too?

The firm is built around businesses and their owners. Where an owner's personal position is bound up with the business — which is usual in an owner-run company — that sits inside the engagement. Purely personal work unconnected to a business is outside the firm's focus.

Can Rationale Services work alongside an accountant I already have?

Yes. Some clients keep an existing adviser for one piece of work and hand the rest over. The firm will set out in the engagement letter exactly which parts it holds and which stay elsewhere, so nothing falls into the gap between the two.

What should I have ready before the first conversation?

A rough picture of your business: what it does, how many entities, how many states you operate in, headcount on payroll, and the honest state of your current records. You do not need anything tidied up first — the firm would rather see the records as they actually are.
